The Livable Edit

PROJECT FEATURE

Thousand Oaks

Our vision for this Thousand Oaks home was to bring together modern simplicity and Old-World warmth, timeless yet completely livable for a busy family. Natural materials played a starring role, from antique French oak beams and hand-crafted zellige tile to genuine limestone. The Thousand Oaks Project was featured on The Haven List.

Welcome back to The Livable Edit. This month we are spotlighting the Thousand Oaks Project, a whole home renovation in Thousand Oaks, California, in the heart of the Conejo Valley in Ventura County. The clients loved arches and stone, two organic elements we carried throughout every room to create continuity and character. In the kitchen, we focused on making the space more functional for their large family while keeping it inviting and beautiful. Below is a full look at the materials, finishes, and design decisions that brought this home to life.

About Thousand Oaks: A Conejo Valley Family Community in Ventura County

Thousand Oaks is the second-largest city in Ventura County, sitting at the heart of the Conejo Valley about 40 miles west of downtown Los Angeles. Named for the stately oak trees that dot the landscape, the city is known for its 15,000 acres of preserved open space, more than 150 miles of trails, and one of the most respected school districts in Southern California. It is consistently ranked among the safest cities in the state and has long been a favorite for families who want big-city access without big-city pace.

What makes Thousand Oaks special for residential design is the architecture and the lots. Many homes sit on generous parcels with mature oak trees and views of the surrounding hills. The vibe is rooted, warm, and family-centered, which made it the perfect setting for a home that leans into Old-World materiality with a fresh, modern sensibility.

Thousand Oaks Project Featured on The Haven List

This home was selected as a feature on The Haven List, a recognition we are proud of and one that reflects the level of craft, intention, and design depth that went into every room. From the antique French oak beams to the hand-glazed tile and full slab limestone moments, every material was chosen to tell a layered, livable story for this growing family.

Kitchen: Taj Mahal Countertops, White Oak Cabinetry, and Vintage Timberworks Beams

The kitchen is the heart of this home and was designed first and foremost to function for a large family. We focused on making the layout work harder while keeping the space inviting and beautiful. The kitchen island comes to life with just a few thoughtfully curated pieces. We kept the styling minimal, allowing the stunning Taj Mahal countertops and surrounding finishes to take center stage. Every detail reflects the signature Joey Snow Design Co. aesthetic: elevated, yet livable.

White oak cabinetry pairs perfectly with a custom limestone range hood, creating a natural, refined palette. The Vintage Timberworks beams, crafted from hand-selected milled white oak, bring warmth and character to the space. They are a defining architectural moment in the room and the kind of detail that takes a kitchen from beautiful to unforgettable. Häti Home barstools at the island bring a blend of comfort and durability that is essential for a family home.

Laundry Room: Black and White Tumbled Marble Checkered Floor

A bold checkered floor in black-and-white tumbled marble tile sets the tone in the laundry room, paired with classic shiplap walls and warm Atlas brass hardware that makes everyday tasks feel a little more special.

Benjamin Moore Rockport Gray on the cabinetry brings the perfect soft contrast, while a rattan wall sconce brings in a layer of warmth and texture. It is a laundry room you will actually look forward to stepping into.

Primary Bathroom: Limestone Herringbone Floors and Tile of Ezra Zellige

The primary bathroom was designed with both form and function in mind. A double vanity, separate water closet, and enclosed shower bring flow and efficiency, while a freestanding Pottery Barn tub creates the ultimate spa moment.

Limestone floors laid in a classic herringbone pattern add timeless texture, complemented by zellige shower wall tile from Tile of Ezra and a soft touch from the Kohler faucets. We used Portola Paint Brooks Roman Clay to bring in depth and movement on the walls, balanced with Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee at 50 percent for a warm, clean backdrop.

Why Old-World Materials Work in a Modern Family Home

One of the questions we get asked most about this project is how to bring Old-World character into a home that still has to function for modern family life. The answer comes down to a few principles we used throughout this project.

First, anchor every room with one or two natural materials that have visible age or texture. Antique French oak beams, hand-glazed zellige, full-slab limestone, and tumbled marble all bring a sense of history that brand-new finishes cannot replicate. Second, balance those weighty materials with quiet backgrounds: Swiss Coffee on the walls, simple shaker cabinetry, minimal styling. Third, choose performance pieces for the spots where life happens hardest. The Pottery Barn freestanding tub, the Häti Home barstools, the Kohler faucets — these all hold up to real use without breaking the design story.

Thousand Oaks Project: Frequently Asked Questions

A few of the questions we have received most often about this project across platforms:

What countertops are used in the Thousand Oaks Project kitchen?

The kitchen features Taj Mahal quartzite countertops paired with white oak cabinetry and a custom limestone range hood. Taj Mahal is a soft, warm-toned natural quartzite that brings movement and depth without competing with the surrounding finishes.

Where are the kitchen ceiling beams from?

The beams are from Vintage Timberworks and were crafted from hand-selected milled white oak. They are a defining architectural element of the kitchen and bring authentic Old-World warmth into the space.

What zellige tile is used in the primary bathroom?

The shower walls feature zellige tile from Tile of Ezra. Hand-glazed zellige has natural variation from tile to tile, which gives the wall a quiet, dimensional movement that machine-made tile cannot replicate.

What paint colors are used in the Thousand Oaks Project?

The laundry room cabinetry is Benjamin Moore Rockport Gray. The primary bathroom walls feature Portola Paint Brooks Roman Clay layered over Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee at 50 percent for a warm, clean backdrop. Each color was chosen to complement the natural materials throughout the home.

What style is the Thousand Oaks Project?

The home blends modern simplicity with Old-World warmth. We carried two organic elements, arches and stone, throughout the home to create continuity and character, while keeping every space completely livable for a busy family.
